IEM student Nikolay Latyshev implemented a startup as a graduation paper on synthetic diamonds

IEM student Nikolay Latyshev has successfully undertaken an internship under the program #startupasdiploma in the TechnoSpark Group. He has interned with technological startup CVD Spark – the company creating a line of product for industries using synthetic diamonds in the manufacturing processes. The subject of Nilolay’s internship was drafting and verification of product ideas. The TSU student has found out that not only polycrystalline and monocrystalline diamonds can be the company product but also thoroughly developed technologies of their synthesis.

The CVD Spark company has synthesized diamonds since 2014, firstly the polycrystalline ones which are used in electronics, optic devices, mechanical processing and drilling. But quickly it was found out that the demand for polycrystalline diamonds is quite narrow. In 2019 the focus was shifted onto monocrystalline diamonds the market for which is wider due to their application in jewelry. But there was an additional difficulty in obtaining the technology for crystal growing.

To create high-purity solid materials the CVD (chemical vapor deposition) process is used. This technology provides a batch production of synthetic diamonds therefore increasing productivity of industries using such materials.
During the internship the student of the IEM TSU “Entrepreneurship and project management” program Nikolay Latyshev had to conduct an entrepreneurial research – to clarify the product ideas of the CVD Spark to understand the subject the company should concentrate on. A map of company contacts was made: the list of TechnoSpark employees, clients and partners including the foreign ones. During communication with them the student was looking into the matter of the industry and there came the idea that the company might sell not only the diamonds.
The final product of the company may be not only a diamond, either polycrystalline or monocrystalline one, but a part of technology as well, Nikolay Latyshev told during the presentation of his work on the program #startupasdiploma.
The vice-rector for academic affairs Evgeniy Lukov, commenting the results of TSU students internship in the TechnoSpark Group, noted that he was pleasantly surprised with success of humanities students with the startups requiring a technical knowledge.

Let us remind you that TSU has been participating in the TechnoSpark Group program #startupasdiploma since 2018/2019 academic year. Since then 12 students have undertaken the internships in TechnoSpark startups. There is going to be the fourth season and some TSU students have already qualified to join the program.
