IEM TSU Students Explore the Work of Tomskstat
Second-year students from the Institute of Economics and Management (IEM) at Tomsk State University (TSU), specializing in Economics (via the "Business Analytics" and "Financial Economics" programs) and Management (via the "Management" and "Kapitany" / "Captains" programs), visited the Tomsk Regional Office of the Federal State Statistics Service (Tomskstat) to tackle professional tasks.
The students were introduced to the system of statistical indicators that characterize the socio-economic development of the region. These indicators are meticulously gathered by Tomskstat employees for various purposes. During a practical session, the students compared how statistics were compiled in the past versus the present day by participating in transferring information from paper carriers to electronic spreadsheets.
According to IEM student Anastasia Nadezhdina, the visit to Tomskstat as part of their practical class was a useful and unusual experience for her classmates. "It was very interesting to see the organizational structure from the inside and learn how the work at Tomskstat is organized. Upon completing the 'Economic Statistics' course, we will receive the corresponding professional qualification, and I, for one, am seriously considering starting a career in this direction. Especially since Tomskstat offers many opportunities for students—you can do internships or find part-time work," shared Anastasia.
The session at Tomskstat was held within the framework of the "Economic Statistics" discipline. This course covers the history of statistics and the organization of statistical activities in Russia. Students complete practical assignments using data from Rosstat (the Federal State Statistics Service) and learn how to collect this data: each student will conduct their own statistical research comparing the dynamics of food price levels.
The "Economic Statistics" course provides students with an additional qualification for an early career start. Furthermore, as the students themselves note, knowledge of a complex subject like statistics is very helpful in managing personal budgets and tracking expenses.
On October 22, as part of World Statistics Day, a meeting will be held at IEM between students and representatives of the regional Office of the Federal State Statistics Service.
