Unique method named “Storyline” is applied to create English language environment at IEM

The method developed in Scotland has been implemented at IEM since 2018 for scientific platforms and conferences to create the English language environment for the students. Having already become a tradition at IEM, the Business Workshop as a part of the Forum “Trends of Economics and Management Education” this year was dedicated to socially responsible business.

The workshop “A Short Stroll down the High Street of the Future: Innovative Companies” was organized by senior lectures fr om the Faculty of Foreign Languages of TSU Tamara Budlova and Olesya Pianzina. Among the participants are FFL students, IEM master students, IEM professors headed by IEM Director Evgenia Nekhoda and IEM experts: professor Olga Nedospasova and postgraduate student Zhang Jie.

The students were accomplishing a challenging task to create their own company and present it in English with the time lim it of 3,5 hours. All the students did excellent jobs despite the difficulty of the socially responsible business topic.

The event was carried out in the form of teamwork: 45 students were divided into 6 teams, each of those created a company from the scratch including the staff with the biographies and positions, the business plan and location.

The participants created quite unusual companies for the short period of time and one will be able to start any of these companies even tomorrow, Olga Nedospasova says. All the projects were excellent so the experts couldn’t pick one as the best.

The idea to unite together the students of FFL and IEM was successful, they were helping each other and enjoyed the opportunity to speak English, Tamara Budlova says. The students of IEM are very creative, they understand the ideas fast and find the way to implement them.

The unique method named “Storyline” developed in Scotlan was brought to TSU by the English in 2012. Nowadays TSU is the only university in Russia using this method. Since 2018 FFL professors have been using the “Storyline” for the scientific platforms and conferences.

Tamara Budlova mentioned that the last workshop had been so impressive for either the professors and students that the new workshop using the ‘Storyline’ method has been already scheduled for next spring.

Nowadays IEM consistently works towards creating the English language environment for students.

1.       The English Language section has been included into the annual conference “Economics as It Seen by The Young”. The business workshop in English will be a part of the conference in spring 2025.

2.       The business workshop in English is included into different events held by IEM: forums, conferences. It is a unique format implemented at IEM.
